2. Australian Synchrotron Science Winter School 2009 – deadline this week!

A reminder that applications for the Australian Synchrotron Science Winter School to be held in Melbourne from 13-16 July are due by this Friday 22 May. There are ten positions available for New Zealand participants.
Following the Winter School will be a two-day workshop using the protein crystallography beamlines especially for NZ researchers. There are ten positions available for this workshop.

Australian Synchrotron Science Winter School 2009

13-16 July 2009, Melbourne

The inaugural Australian Synchrotron Science Winter School will be held from the 13-16 July, 2009. A comprehensive 4-day programme has been developed with the aim of building knowledge of synchrotron techniques and providing hands-on practical experience for young researchers.

The programme will be held at the Australian Synchrotron and will involved hands-on beamline experiments together with a structured set of lectures by leading experts in the field. Students will be guided through the process of data collection by experienced beamline scientists, and learn about sample mounting, data acquisition and interpretation of the results.

All accommodation, catering and travel expenses will be supported by the Australian Synchrotron.

There are ten positions available for New Zealand participants, who are to be selected by the NZ Synchrotron Group. The programme is aimed at PhD student or early career researcher level, with little or no prior synchrotron experience. The course will be a general introduction to synchrotron techniques.

To apply for a place on the winter school, please send:

  • a 1-page curriculum vitae
  • a 1-page cover letter detailing the relevance of the winter school to your current research and/or career deveopment, and briefly describing how much prior synchrotron experience (if any)
  • a supporting letter from your supervisor

to synchrotron@rsnz.org.

The deadline for application is 22 May 2009.

In addition, on 17-18 July 2009 there will be a 2-day extension specifically for a hands-on workshop on the two Protein Crystallography lines, which is being organised by the NZ Synchrotron Group especially for New Zealand researchers. Successful winter school attendees may elect to extend their stay for this, or may send an application for the Protein crystallography workshop only. 10 places are available for this workshop. Please indicate in your application cover letter if you are applying for the Winter School, the Protein Crystallography Workshop, or both.
