We help New Zealand’s research community access the state of the art facilities at the Australian Synchrotron and facilitate our members’ participation at regional meetings.
The New Zealand Synchrotron Group Ltd (NZSG) is a small Crown entity. Its function is to oversee Aotearoa New Zealand’s investment in the Australian Synchrotron and to coordinate access for New Zealand researchers wishing to use the facility.
New Zealand has access rights to the Australian Synchrotron in recognition of our government’s assistance in funding the beamline infrastructure and an annual access fee.
The NZSG receives funding from the government (through a Strategic Science Investment Fund investment) and eight of our partner research organisations.
The Government is not a shareholder in NZSG but actively supports the access arrangement as a component of the Science, Research and Innovation Cooperation Agreement between Australia and New Zealand, with oversight of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
The company has a small board of Directors elected by its shareholders, and an Access Committee that oversees researcher applications for access to the Synchrotron.
Day-to-day secretariat services are provided by the Royal Society Te Apārangi, and the NZSG operates from the society’s premises in Wellington. The secretariat:
Membership of the NZSG has considerable benefits for synchrotron researchers, and we welcome applications from new organisations.
