How to get access

Any researcher in New Zealand can apply to use the Synchrotron and NZSG can help arrange access.

All enquiries about access to the Australian Synchrotron should be directed to NZSG’s Executive Officer, Dr Don Smith. Don will guide you through the process and put you in touch with the team at ANSTO.

Shareholder-affiliated access arrangements

Special arrangements for access are offered to researchers from shareholder organisations, in recognition of their ongoing support of the programme.

Because there is more demand for access to the Australian Synchrotron than New Zealand’s entitlement under the arrangement with ANSTO, the Access Committee, which reports to the Board, evaluates proposals and chooses which get beamtime allocations.

Assessment process

The Access Committee seeks to equitably ensure that a wide range of projects are awarded access, particularly so that students can gain experience in using the Synchrotron.

The Committee also selects the recipients of student educational and networking opportunities and travel grants whenever these become available.

Accommodation at the Australian Synchrotron

The Australian Synchrotron has a guesthouse on site where groups who are using the facility may stay.

Free accommodation is provided for up to three people for each group undertaking experiments at the Synchrotron who have been awarded Merit or Preferred Access beamtime.

All arrangements for accommodation are made by researchers directly with the User Office at the Synchrotron.
